AZ-D Joon Jaunt (7/28)
Another June a.k.a. "Joon" Jaunt has passed into AZ-D history. Here's a little background on the June/Joon Jaunt for newer members. The June Jaunt started out as the trip to a DCS show, which always takes place in June, hence "The June Jaunt". Since DCS only takes place every two years, in off years the June Jaunt outing consisted of a day long cruise to a destination of interest, then back with perhaps a conclusion at the Scottsdale Pavilions Car Show and dinner at the 5 & Diner. Now the Jaunt is simply an annual outing to a destination of interest, and sometimes due to whatever factors, the annual Jaunt ends up not taking place in June, but sometime later in the Summer, so in such a case we change the name from June to Joon.

This year the Joon Jaunt took place in the Tucson area starting with a late morning "Potnick/Picluck" at John Spangler's garage. Once everyone arrived Ben Ferguson, our Car Cruise Director, orchestrated a trip to a nearby Albertsons so each member could buy a unique food item to contribute to the feast. Once back at John's the grill was fired up, bratwurst and hamburgers were cooked, and we indulged. During lunch an already gloomy sky broke loose with an intense thunderstorm and heavy rain. This caused a bit of a delay for or departure to the Titan Missile Museum. Clock ticking, we made our way towards Green Valley down Interstate 19 when we encountered one of AZ's infamous monsoon storms. The torrential rain tested our door seals, and forced us to pull over to the side of the highway to wait out the limited visibility. Once we finally arrived, we were treated to a guided tour of the last remaining intact '60s era Titan II missile and silo. Following the museum, we made our way back to Tucson for dinner at Swensen's and we concluded the daylong event back at John's by winding down with a lot of socializing and some light tech work on Steve Mayo's new D.

AZ-D member in the Arizona Republic (7/29)
Many were surprised when they opened up the July 29th Sunday Arizona Republic to the Cars section and discovered AZ-D member Dan Wilson and VIN 16192 big as life on the front page. The Republic featured Dan and his DeLorean as part of their ongoing "My Dream Car" series, which in the past has included Mark Kramer, owner of the Scottsdale Pavilions McDonalds that host the famous weekly cruise-in, and even an Arizona Diamondback. The article on Dan and 16192 can be seen here:

Universal Studios Hollywood - BTTF Closing Event (8/2)
As told by new member Steve Mayo, 10398

On Wednesday, the day before the event, my brother and I jumped into my Delorean 10398 and headed to CA. The trip was nothing special, I found the ride to be pretty good for a car so low to the ground . In Blythe we ran into the Ford Gt 40 club, but I'm sorry to say they weren't too interested in chatting one bit . Was it something I said?

Once at DMC CA Don was more then happy to fix one or two minor things on 10398 . After a few hour at Don's , My brother and I headed off for our hotel. The next morning we arrived at DMC CA to find a fleet of Deloreans! It started with Don's super-charged D at the front door of the shop and went to the turn-around and came halfway back!

Once at Universal Studios we met up with 30 or 40 more Deloreans from around the state and others. Universal set aside the front parking lot just for the Deloreans and we took up every spot. The media was the there along with passers-by taking pix, very fun stuff! At this point the fake Dr. Brown (not Christopher Lloyd ) went around looking at the cars and getting pix taken to great fanfare. Once we were entering the park we ran into Sean Hagan from AZ-D and a member from san Diego. (Chris or Loran I presume? -JS)

I’m sorry to say the event itself only lasted a few minutes and Mr. Lloyd did not talk for but a few lines “Thanks for coming," etc. We found out later that Universal did not even pay him for travel time . After the show my brother and I met up with Don and he give us some line passes for the day, thanked us for coming and that’s the last of the event. We hit up the BTTF ride a few times and made plans to meet up later for the drive home . We both enjoyed the park without waiting in any lines all day and meet up with Sean for the drive home .Sean’s Red Delorean leading the way we headed back to the future …..........NO No no I mean home to Phoenix. :)

AZ-D Monthly Lunch (8/11)
We had an impressive Summer turnout for our monthly get together at Uncle Sam's. Fourteen members made it, with a total of five DeLoreans parked right out at the entrance of the restaurant. Barrett Mitchell swung by with word of an exotic car gathering in the parking lot of Scottsdale Lotus, so some of us headed over at the conclusion of lunch to catch an impressive assortment of dream cars courtesy of the Scottsdale Exotic Car Club, including a Porsche Carrera GT, a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, and even an Enzo Ferrari just to name a few. Following this a few of us ventured across town to make a four DeLorean appearance at the 83rd Ave. car show in Peoria and dinner at Sonic.

B.M.E. / AZ-D Breakfast Run (8/26)
AZ-D met up with the folks from the British Motor Enthusiasts for a cruise to breakfast. These monthly Sunday morning breakfast runs have been a B.M.E. tradition for eight years, and the different British car clubs around the Valley take turns organizing them. AZ-D took it's first turn in August. We gathered at the Northwest corner of 32nd St. & Shea Blvd. in Phoenix around 7AM and from there took a brief eleven mile scenic cruise through the Town of Paradise Valley and Scottsdale to ultimately arrive at the Scottsdale Pavilions 5 & Diner for breakfast and a multi prize raffle. The event drew an unexpected turnout of almost 40 people in about 20 British cars of every flavor including vintage Minis, Jaguars, a Morgan and of course a couple DeLoreans.

AZ-D welcomes three new members
The Summer has brought us three new official AZ-D members! We would like to Welcome Steve Lebrecht, Jeffrey Lawson and Tom Spearman to club. Steve is a resident of Oro Valley Arizona, and he brought his D, VIN 7148, to the Joon Jaunt to meet us for his first AZ-D event. Jeffrey Lawson is a four year owner from Diamond Bar, CA! Our SoCal presence is ever growing. Also, Tom Spearman from Coolidge Arizona just joined up. Tom is heading over to SoCal in September to pick up the DeLorean he just purchased. Glad to have them as part of AZ-D.

DMCH To Build "New" DeLoreans
In a rather bold public move, DeLorean Motor Company (Texas) recently announced they will begin making more cars, mostly out of old stock parts. They plan to make about 20 per year at a cost of $57,500 each. The ratios reported vary somewhat but an estimated 80% of the car will be NOS parts and 20% will be new and/or improved parts as deemed necessary.

What about those hard, nay, impossible to find parts of the car (i.e. LF fender, LH torsion bar, RH door sill carpet, Rheostat, etc)? DMC Vice President James Espey posted this response to many similar questions on DMCTalk.com:

"The three biggest items on the horizon are the RH hub carrier, LH fender and LH torsion bar. We have made contact and are in correspondence with prospective suppliers for each of these items."  You can read his whole response by clicking here.

While complete, the cars will be sold as a "kit", and will not have a DeLorean VIN as to help circumvent modern-day emissions and crash test saftey requirements.

Proto-1 Sold on eBay
The only remaining hand-built prototype (featured on countless magazine covers from 1976 til the first Pilot cars) was sold on eBay on August 18, 2007. Through eBay's liveauction feature, Proto-1 had a traditional auction-style rollthrough with a final bid of $100,000. If memory serves, this is what the now-previous owner Tony Ierardi paid for the car just a few years ago before it went extensive restoration. Tony mentioned on his previous attempt to sell Proto-1 on eBay several months ago that he wanted to purchase some nearby property for his growing business. The DeLorean community can only hope that the winner of the auction will keep the car in the public eye. Click here to see the auction page and information.

AZ-D club friend Kevin Abato (member of the DeLorean Mid-Atlantic club) recorded the live auction and was kind enough to share it with us. Click here to download it. (WMV format, 8mb)

Win a DeLorean from Universal Stuidos - Hollywood
With the ride closing down for good September 3rd, why not try to make it a memorable experience by entering to win an '81 DeLorean! Yes it may be redundant to own 2, but might as well give it a shot. Click Here for the form, and good luck.

Purdue scientists develop "Mr. Fusion" for military use
Just when you thought nothing from Back to the Future II's bright outlook on 2015 could come true, sure enough scientists have made a device that will take darn near anything and make energy out of it.  It's too big for mad scientist use just yet, but give 8 years and who knows? Here's a link to the article.
